Flood Protection System in Hlohovec

problematic situation

In the town of Hlohovec (Slovakia) there were regular floods due to improper ploughing of agricultural land.  

Goal of the Project

The town requested a project aimed at reducing erosion directly on agricultural land and building a whole cascade of flood protection measures in the stream called Šumperský jarok, where water flows only in times of intense rainfall.

Implementation

In the upper part of the Šumpers ditch, wooden interlaced dykes made of acacia wood branches were constructed, followed by wheel dykes also made of acacia wood. The upper interlaced dykes were selected for the purpose of retaining erosion runoff from the agricultural land; in total, 17 dykes were constructed.

Stake dikes were constructed to attenuate the entrainment of biomass and branches in the flood wave. A very interesting dyke made of acacia wood and stone was already built on the main tributary. This is followed by loose dykes, gabion dykes and finally brush dykes at the end.
